A bracket is a small plate bonded to the tooth, with an archwire running through the brackets. The wire wants to return to its original shape and puts very light but constant pressure on the tooth. Under that steady gentle force the bone around the root resorbs on one side and rebuilds on the other. Over months the tooth moves into the correct position, and the bone around it firms up again.
It is worth understanding that this is not only about appearance. With a bad bite the chewing load is distributed unevenly — some teeth wear down early, jaw joint pain appears, and the gaps between crowded teeth cannot be cleaned properly, so decay and gum inflammation keep coming back there.
To be honest: braces are not for everyone and not at any moment. Here is the real picture.
Note that the first three are temporary obstacles. Decay is treated, tartar is removed, and after that braces are perfectly possible. That is exactly how any correct treatment begins.
The choice mostly comes down to two things: price and visibility. The medical result is the same with all systems — what differs is the road to it.

Aligners are not suitable for every case: where a tooth needs a complex rotation or the root has to be moved, braces remain the more precise tool. After the X-ray the orthodontist will tell you what is realistic in your case.
Seven stages. The first two usually happen in a single visit.
The orthodontist examines the bite and a panoramic X-ray is taken on site, in the same visit. The consultation is free.
You get the choice of system, an estimated duration and the total amount — before anything begins. There are no surprise charges.
Decay is treated, tartar is removed and a professional cleaning is done. This stage cannot be skipped — a bracket bonds far better to a clean tooth.
Takes about 1-1.5 hours. There is no pain: the tooth is not ground or drilled, the bracket is simply bonded to the enamel.
For 2-3 days you may feel pressure and mild soreness — the teeth have started to move. A usual painkiller handles it. We provide wax for the cheek.
The wire is changed once a month (less often with self-ligating systems). The visit takes 15-30 minutes.
The braces come off and the teeth are polished. A retainer is fitted immediately — without it the teeth drift back.
The exact timeline is written into your plan after the X-ray. These are realistic averages.
6-12 months. Slight crowding or one or two displaced teeth.
12-24 months. The most common scenario: crowding plus bite correction.
24-30 months. Pronounced malocclusion, treatment involving an extraction.

Twice a day is not enough. You need a special V-shaped brush and interdental brushes.
The jet washes out what a brush cannot reach. With braces it is close to essential.

Fitting itself is not painful — the tooth is not ground down. For the first 2-3 days and after each adjustment there is a feeling of pressure: the teeth are moving. A usual painkiller handles it and it passes on its own.
Usually from 11-13, once the permanent teeth have come through. There is no upper limit — braces are fitted at 40 and at 50. What matters is not age but the condition of the gums and bone.
For the first few years yes, after that usually only at night. A tooth 'remembers' its old position for years, and the retainer is the only thing holding the result. It is part of the treatment, not an extra service.
Often yes. Teeth move as a system: pushing one shifts its neighbours. There are cases where partial treatment or aligners are enough — that is determined from the X-ray.
Not in themselves. The bracket is bonded to the enamel and comes off without damage. The harm comes from poor hygiene: if plaque builds up around a bracket, white spots are left behind after removal. With proper cleaning that does not happen.
